MEMBERSHIP DETAILS

The Brathay Exploration Group is Britain's fastest-growing youth exploration group. We have for over 50 years organised more than 550 expeditions involving some 6,300 members and leaders. In 1997 the Group was awarded a
special medal from the Royal Geographical Society, for service to exploration and youth adventurous activities.
Expeditions, all led by experienced volunteers, have travelled the world - from South America, Africa, Iceland and the Far East to the home mountains around the Group's base at Brathay Hall, on the northern shores of Windermere in the English Lake District.
You don't have to join an expedition or course to become a member of the Group. We welcome applications for membership from anyone aged 15 upwards - and from societies and groups.

The benefits are numerous and include:
The opportunity to plan and run your own expedition using the group's expertise, equipment and facilities for a small fee.

3 Copies per year of the Group's own No-Limits magazine.

The opportunity to come and stay in the Group's mountain style members' lodge on the Brathay Estate in the Lake District.

Join in all Members Club events, including the annual reunion held at Brathay in October.

Purchase Outdoor gear through the Club at Discount prices.

Application Form ( not required if you are already applying to join an expedition)

Membership Rules

The following rules apply to all persons involved with the Group, irrespective of type of membership.

General
An individual, group, institute, or family, may apply to join a membership category, as explained in the application form, on payment of the current membership fee applicable to that category. The categories and fee structure are subject to annual review by the Board of Trustees. Membership is for a calendar year, the renewal date being the 1st January.

The Brathay Exploration Group expects all members to show consideration for others and the environment.

Controlled substances: The Brathay Exploration Group insists that the U.K. Law is followed and that illegal substances such as drugs etc. are banned. Any members found breaking this rule whilst on Group property or involved in a group activity, will have their membership withdrawn and be dismissed from the Group, forthwith.

On the estate
All persons whilst on the premises of the Group, or within the Brathay Estate, are required to observe all notices posted in respect of the property of the Group and The Brathay Hall Trust. In addition members are required to follow basic standards in respect of all property.

Members of the Exploration Group have no right of access to any other buildings on the Brathay estate except the Group’s office at Old Brathay and the buildings which make up the Field Quarters site in the woods. The Brathay estate including the lake frontage is generally closed to members, however members may with discretion walk in the wooded area to the west (rear) of the Field Quarters.

The rope course adjacent to our site is out of bounds, being for the sole use of Brathay Hall staff and clients.

Members are required to take account of their actions and their effect on the safety and enjoyment of others whilst at the Group's headquarters, or taking part in any group activity.

On an expedition or course
On an expedition, training course, or club event, organised by the Group, members must abide by the authority of the designated leader. He/she acts with the full authority of the Group. In a situation where safety is involved, a breach of this rule may lead to the member being dismissed from the expedition, course or event and membership being withdrawn. That member would then have no financial claim against the Group.

Selection for an expedition or course: the Group's policy is that wherever practicable no medical condition or handicap will be a bar to a member being accepted. The offer of a place is the responsibility of the leader of that event. The selection process may vary depending on the type of expedition or course, however in exceptional circumstances a member initially accepted on the basis of information given, may have that selection withdrawn if facts or events come to light making it undesirable for that member to continue.

Leaders
As people under 18 years may be members of expeditions and courses, leaders must be willing to authorise the Group to carry out a full criminal records bureau check..
