Mountain Leader Courses Award Scheme
Mountain Leader Training England (MLTE) administers the Summer Mountain Leader, the Walking Group Leader, the Climbing Wall and the Single Pitch Awards. MLTE registers candidates, approves Course Providers and ensures the quality and relevance of training and assessment courses run on its behalf.
The Summer Mountain Leader Award is run by Climb365 (an approved Course Provider) on behalf of the group. Pre-requisites
1. 12 months hillwalking experiece
2. Age 18+
Registration
3. Registered with Mountaineering Council - membership of British Mountaineering Council is included with Brathay Exploration Club Membership
4. Register with MLTE or MLTS (Mountain Leader Training Scotland) - Cost £35 in 2010
Training
5. Log a minimum 20 quality mountain days (see below for definition)
6. Complete a training course - these are run over 6 days with approx. 60 hours contact time - BEG runs courses once or twice a year
7. First Aid Course (BEG run an Outdoor first aid course once a year)
Consolidation
8. The exact amount of time and type of activity required to achieve the Award varies between individuals and personal development plans will be formulated during the training course
9. A total of 40 quality mountain days are required prior to assessment
Assessment
10. Logbook - assessors will check logbook is satisfactory
11. 5-6 day assessment covering all aspects of the syllabus - BEG runs courses once or twice a year
Quality Mountain Days
Usually some or all of these criteria would be fulfilled:
• the individual takes part in the planning and leadership
• navigation skills are required away from marked paths
• experience must be in terrain and weather comparable to that found in UK and Irish hills
• knowledge is increased and skills practised
• attention is paid to safety
• five hours or more journey time
• adverse conditions may be encountered
